Club Foyer>Rainwear Vignettes>John's Armless Fun
Wendy lived in the Home Counties in the mid 1960s and had a good job. One day in November, she went to town to buy herself a new mackintosh. Her husband of a few months came with her and soon they were in Debenhams. She looked at various ones until she espied a maroon gabardine cape. She told her husband David that she had always fancied a cape. She had a lovely moment admiring herself in the mirror (she was a dishy brunette) as she tried it on and liked what she saw. She loved the hood and the deep armslits and as she was wearing a navy suit, her arms stood out. David bought and paid for it and it was soon over her arm. He then bought her a pair of elbow-length gloves.
They wandered out of the store and went to a restaurant for lunch, where they wined and dined. They decided to have a look at the river before returning home so took the tube to the embankment. Wendy thought it was getting chilly, which was a good excuse to put on her cape. David dropped it on her shoulders, whereupon she fastened the buttons and raised the hood. David told her she looked entrancing as her arms slid from sight. Then he asked her if she would like a hat and they retraced their steps to Oxford Street where he bought her a black fake fur hat. It looked very chic and complemented her cape. After a cup of tea and a teacake in an 'olde world tearoom' which, though warm, didn't induce Wendy to unbutton her cape, they made their way to Marylebone and caught the train to High Wycombe, meeting one or two friends who told Wendy what a lovely cape she had. At High Wycombe they left the train and walked home, Wendy hand in hand with David. They reached their house and as soon as the door was shut they embraced, David telling her she was a star and how he loved her in a cape. They kissed passionately and soon David had unbuttoned her and her cape was discarded.
They decided to go out for a drink that night and Wendy changed into a warm woollen dress in mid blue. David dropped her cape on her shoulders, after buttoning up she donned her new gloves which were handy as her dress was shortsleeved. She then put on her new hat and off they went. Their friends were waiting at 'The White Hart' and were full of rapt admiration for Wendy's new cape. She undid it and told her what a pretty dress. Soon the gin and tonic and Watney's Red Barrel was enjoyed. A convivial time was had. Eventually time was called, Wendy buttoned her cape and away they went. This time she kept her arms inside as it had got colder. They reached home and David poured a nightcap which they had immediately, after which they were locked in embrace kissing passionately culminating in Wendy's cape being undone (how she loved it) and shed before collapsing on the sofa. More fun followed upstairs.
Nearly a year later, the happy couple are out walking. David is pushing the pram and Wendy is beside him as they stroll beside the lake in the park. Wendy is wearing her cape and is grateful to David for pushing the pram because it is cold so she wants her arms inside. Little Joshua doesn't worry one way or the other. Wendy looks forward to the summer when she plans to wear her cape undone over her summer finery. She is still as pretty as a picture.
