The Boat Race
Amanda and Tony had built a strong relationship, seeing plenty of each other in the vacations as Tony was now at Cambridge studying Engineering. He was also in the Eight that were to compete against Oxford on the Thames. She was going to watch the race and was to view it near the finish at Mortlake. Whatever the weather, she was going to wear her maroon raincape so that Tony would spot her easily afterwards.
As it happened, it was a miserable day with a continuous light rain - which didn't worry her as with it it cascading off her cape she felt so pleasantly enclosed.
It was some wait before the two eights could be seen in the distance and, yes, the Cambridge boat is half-a-length ahead and gaining. She enjoys cheering them on - and there is Tony, rowing at No. 4. And now it's over, and Cambridge have made it!
The boat is out of the water and they are quaffing champagne. Amanda wanders over to congratulate Tony with a kiss, a somewhat damp experience as she wraps her arms round him.
Now the prizegiving is taking place indoors with a memento for each crew member. And there's the evening to enjoy. She's wearing a dazzling number: what a celebration!
At last it's time to make tracks. Tony drops Amanda's cape on her shoulders, telling her that spotting her on the bank spurred them on! Rain has stopped so the hood is down as they make their way to Euston, catching the last train. They are alone in their compartment so can snuggle up - but Amanda won't let Tony unbutton her yet.
In less than an hour they are at Hemel Hempstead, walking back to Amanda's home. They sneak in quietly and soon Tony's arms fold around Amanda whose own arms emerge and lock around him.
They are 'in heaven'. Then the best moment: Tony 'opens her up'... Soon her cape is shed and the sofa beckons.
The end of a perfect day!
