"You didn't wear your cape, then?"
"Not this time. I carried it home"
Joanna brought in her mackintosh cape and hung it up in the hallway.
It was Saturday afternoon. Soon lunch was over. She and Susan were going to the cinema.
"It's started to rain again!"she said, squinting up through the window...
"Well, wear your mackintosh," said Susan. "Isn't that what it's for?"
"Ugh! ... Must I?"
This studied reluctance was all a pretence. She loved wearing her mackintosh. She loved the gentle rustle of the cape as she draped it over her shoulders; she loved the feel of the soft rubber on her hands; she loved its dazzling whiteness. She loved the admiring glances of passers-by as she walked to and from her home. With her high cheekbones, pearl white skin and startling blue eyes, she was beautiful - and she knew it. She wondered sometimes if it was her or her mackintosh that brought the attraction: perhaps both. She always wanted to wear it, even when it wasn't raining.
But that had been her secret - until now. As she buttoned herself into her cape, Susan caught her expression of delight.
"Joanna! - You actually like wearing it, don't you? Despite what you've said!"
A pause.
"Er, actually, I suppose, actually, yes!" Joanna confessed, colouring a little.
And she added, firmly, having taken the plunge, " I do. I really do."
Susan opened the door of their flat and she walked, with an unusually decisive swish, out into the rain......
