Club Foyer>Rainwear Vignettes>
She lived in Berkhamsted and grew up in the late 1940s/early 1950s. As a young child, she had loved her green raincape but had to graduate to a navy gaberdine mac on going to school. These were 'de rigeur' at the high school. Her mother, however, had possessed a blue satinised raincape for some time. Michelle envied her! When she got to her teens, her mother generously let her borrow it when she went out with her friends. Michelle really fancied herself when she wore it, even wearing it when it was a sunny day. She loved being enclosed in it with all the buttons fastened, when she went to youth club. It always aroused her friend's interest when she undid the buttons to reveal her outfit.
One evening she was with her friends when she met Bill. He was a student at the boys' grammar school. They got talking and had a soft drink together (being a youth club it was dry) and found they lived near each other. She was looking her best in a lovely red dress (she liked clothes) and he was well turned-out in blazer and slacks. They danced a few numbers to music from a record-player and conversed. Time flew by and soon it was closing time. Bill, playing the perfect gentleman, placed Michelle's cape on her shoulders. As she did up the buttons she said 'It's hands off, tonight!' as her arms disappeared. It was a moonlit evening and she looked lovely with the hood down. They talked non-stop all the way home. Her parents were already in bed, so Michelle invited Bill in for a cup of tea. Once in the house they fell into each others arms, Bill enjoying the satiny feling of her cape as he hugged her. Eventually his hand found the buttons, which he undid one by one, which Michelle loved. They moved to the sofa for you know what.
They saw quite a bit of each other after that and after a while her mother decided on buying a new white raincape so that Michelle could wear her old one whenever she wished. It was also quite fun to see mother and daughter out and about in the town caped and hooded on wet days. Michelle went on to secretarial college in London and felt secure in her cape with everything precious out of sight.
