Marjorie

When this tale begins, it is VE Day. And like everyone, Marjorie has looked forward to it for a long time.

Today her husband George, a Flight Lieutenant in the RAF is coming on leave. They live in a pleasant Hertfordshire village and are going to join the local celebrations on the Common. Marjorie has acquired a lovely outfit in a primrose colour. She looks fantastic.

George is arriving at 11 am at the station and she is walking down to the station to meet him.The night before there was a thunderstorm and today looks a little unsettled so Marjorie has her bright green raincape over her arm. She is very fond of it but today she won't put it on unless she has to do so.

Thankfully the train is on time. There is George in his uniform sporting his pilot's wings...

After a sandwich and a cup of tea, George changes into his 'civvies' and they are ready. As they reach the area the parade is to pass, the sky has darkened. Just as the Scout Band passes down comes the rain and on goes Marjorie's cape, whilst George wields an outsize umbrella. She appreciates this as she can keep her arms dry whilst looking very bewitching with the hood up. Happily the rain tails off as they reach the common but Marjorie is taking no chances and apart from lowering the hood, keeps her cape done up.

However, the dark clouds fade away and everywhere is bathed in sunshine. Soon she is carrying her cape over her arm.

They enjoy the short thanksgiving service and walk happily round the common meeting and greeting old friends. They enjoy tea in a marquee, sitting chatting for ages. Later they watch the fireworks, the first since before the war.

By now it is evening and a little chilly. Marjorie shivers so George drops her cape onto her shoulders. She smiles her gratitude, threads her arms through the slits and fastens the buttons.

They make their way to 'The Rose and Crown' for a celebratory drink (or two) and settle in the lounge bar. Marjorie undoes the buttons so that her cape is open, so she can show off her outfit. Both soon feel ...

Outside it is raining again. As they walk home, George calling her 'Little Red Riding Hood' in green and Marjorie gently remonstrating with him as he holds his brolly over her. They reach home and George holds her in his embrace. She holds him tight - once she can get her arms out! He tells her how much her loves her and how super her new outfit is but also how he loves to see her in her cape, especially with the hood up - which, he says, makes her look so exciting - but also when she wears it open at the front to show off her pretty outfits. They eat supper and snuggle together on the sofa far into the night.
