Club Foyer>Rainwear Vignettes>John's Armless Fun
Full Circle
Fred and Fiona were children of the late 1940s - early 1950s. Their children
had grown up and fled the nest. They were nostalgic about the 50s and 60s,
and Fiona had happy memories of her rainwear. She had loved a blue cape
given to her when she was twelve and had bought a similar one a year or two
later but then rubberised rainwear seemed to disappear from the shops. They
both liked 50s icons and the fashions of the day. Fred liked Fiona to look
a true lady.
For a long time they had tried to find where they could get a 1950s raincape and, at last, they saw an advert for the very item in the Daily telegraph. They sent for the catalogue and there was the item Fiona yearned for: a lovely blue mackintosh cape with deep armslits so she could wear it over her coat. A week or so later it arrived and Fiona felt in her seventh heaven as Fred lowered it onto her shoulders, leaving her to fasten the buttons and put up the hood. Fred told her how nice she looked and on being told her suntan had faded, her arms rapidly disappeared from sight.
Although it wasn't raining, Fred dared Fiona to wear her cape to the local. She was happy to do so and looked lovely as she walked along with the sun shining down, her hair immaculate, and all the buttons fastened. It was early spring so not very warm. A number of friends were there and soon they were relaxing. Several women said how much they liked Fiona's cape and wondered where they could get one. Fiona by now had undone the buttons and revealed a super 50s style red dress. The gin and tonic flowed as did the beer, so that all were happily relaxed.
Eventually 'time' was called and Fiona dreamily fastened the buttons, slid her arms from sight and they strolled back. Both were feeling frivolous by now and once in the house, Fred hugged Fiona whose arms emerged to hug him fast. Memories came back as Fred opened her up and....
After
this, Fiona wore her cape a lot, rain or shine, and always drew admiring glances
for she was a handsome woman as well.
