Family Visit

One chill Spring morning, with showers in the offing, Brian and Betty set off to see their daughter, who lived in Tring.

Brian looked dapper in sports coat and flannels and Betty was in sleeveless red wool dress plus sensible heels.  Brian told her she looked swell. As he did so, she unhooked her cape and flipped it over her shoulders. 'Isn't that better still?' she said as she did up the buttons and pulled up the hood. Brian donned his pakamac.

Soon they were at Euston, and on the train to Milton Keynes. Betty snuggled up happily inside her cape.

Forty-five minutes later the train was gliding into Milton Keynes.  There were Caroline and Charlie, plus grandson Jason, waiting for them on the platform. There was a rapturous welcome! Then they piled into the car. Charlie was a sales manager and had a large BMW.  Soon they were at the house and relaxing. Caroline exclaimed when she saw Betty's dress after being very complimentary about her cape.  She just had to try it on! Jason was delighted to see his grandparents who made much of him - Caroline let slip another was on the way!

After a splendid lunch, with much lubrication they went for a walk by the canal. The sun was shining brightly so Betty could leave her cape open. Many eyes looked at her. When they went back for tea Caroline asked where she had bought it as she felt it would suit her and hide the bump!

Eventually it was time to make tracks and they were whisked to the station. As it was still warm Betty continued to keep her cape open. The journey back went without a hitch, but it was raining again when they reached Euston so it was a case of being buttoned and hooded for the last stage by bus.  However it had stopped by the time they dismounted for the last 100 yards. They were glad to cross the threshold and hug each other, relax on the sofa with Betty enjoying being 'undone'.

A few weeks later Caroline, Charlie and Jason came to visit them and Caroline was wearing a blue cape. It was a blustery day and she looked lovely!   Nobody would know that a happy event was on the way!  She told Betty she loved the enclosed feeling!
