Coronation cape

The war was over: Syd and Stella had married and lived at Abbots Langley. Syd was now a fitter at the Ovaltine factory and Stella working as a Dinner lady at a nearby school. They both enjoyed going places on Saturdays.

One sunny Saturday in May they caught the train to London and made their way to Gamages. Syd told Stella it was time she had a new mac and the choice was hers. She chose an iridiscent green cape, telling Syd she liked a cape as it would go over anything and had nice deep armslits. She modelled it; and then Syd paid.

They left hand in hand with it over her arm. She looked trés chic in her grey suit and shiny court shoes (bulled up by Syd). They went to a teashop; then to the cinema to see 'The Cruel Sea'.

When they came out it was dark and much cooler. Stella shrugged her shoulders, smiling gratefully as Syd dropped her cape onto her shoulders. She told him that was much better as she did up the buttons and slid her arms out of sight. They made their way to Euston and caught their train. It wasn't too crowded so they were able to snuggle up close.

Syd told her they were going to London on 2nd June and they must be prepared for all contingencies! On arrival at home, they fell into each other's arms and Stella enjoyed the sensation of her new cape being undone, and a wonderful 'snogging' session. Later they enjoyed a cold supper and more relaxation.

A few weeks later Coronation Day came and the heavens opened! Stella enjoyed watching the proceedings, well protected and glamorous in her new cape. They had a lovely day and went to local celebrations in the village on their return. Friends told Stella what a lovely colour her cape was as she had kept it on despite the weather improving later but unbuttoning it to show off her new dress, bought in honour of the occasion. They finished the evening in the usual manner.

Stella donated her old brown cape to her teenage sister who was delighted with it.It made a nice change from her drab school raincoat!
