Do I object to being covered up?
Dear Lorraine
I was interested to read Lonni's letters.
Like her our family insisted on us being fully covered but we didn't
wear traditional veils. Both my sister and I wore headscarves and long
coats from age twelve. When we were in our late teens we were not allowed
to show more than an eye.
We wore gaberdine double-breasted raincoats, black or green, that reahed
below the knee. We had two silk scarves one worn over the head and the
other to hide the lower half of the face.
I soon got to love the feel of silk scarves on my skin. Wrapping three
of these round my head to totally cover it leaving only a narrow slit
for the eyes is no hardship. I also like the gaberdine raincoats which
in recent years we have bought with big attached hoods to wear over our
heads and face-scarves. We also wear black gloves and baggy trousers and
boots.
Do I object to being covered up? No it is our tradition and enforced
by our close families.
