The classic gaberdine raincoat

The usual fabric for the gaberdine is of course pure wool gaberdine. This is quite difficult to obtain now in the traditional quality (which makes all the difference) and then, usually, it is only navy that is available. (We have a terrific supplier in Bury, - Annis Fabrics, Bury Market - who searches out what there is.)

It is perfectly possible though to make a gaberdine-style uniform raincoat in other materials. For example a school mac in single-texture navy rubberised cotton (*** Alas! No longer available in this material) is historically authentic, and something which many would consider essential to any serious collection. (And almost the same goes for our rubberised polyesters, in brown and beige and slate. I'm fairly sure that precisely these materials were not in uniform service in the fifties, but in look and drape and susurrus - and nose - they simulate to perfection those that certainly were.) - Lorraine
