Preston's brilliant trick has been to cut off all the nice bits of the city from the saccharine prosperity of NEXT and OASIS and WH SMITH with a perfectly brutal inner ring road. So Friargate, on the nice, neglected, impoverished side, has a quite wonderful secondhand bookshop, lots of value cafes, shops which recycle, pubs with plasma screens, all in brightly painted tumbledown.
