When we had a very wet period of weather last month it coincided with my taking a long weekend off. I went down to stay with my mother to get some serious riding and a days hunting (before it is banned!) I packed up all my things including, of course, my riding mac and drove down to the Welsh borders where she lives.
The first day was very wet but despite the rain we went fot a long ride and my mackintosh did not leak at all. However a good deal of driving rain got down my neck and between my legs giving me a wet crutch and bottom after a couple of hours.
Next day, my mackintosh having been dried out overnight, we went hunting and expected to be in the saddle for 4-5 hours! As I had got rather cold the day before my mother suggested that I should wear two riding macs, one over the other. She added "like I made you do as a punishment when you refused to wear your mackintosh one day when you were a teenager!"
I remembered that day all too well and the wonderful feeling wearing two mackintoshes had given me. The problem was that I only had one riding mac! However, mum was equal to that as she said that my cousin had been down the week before and left all her kit down there as she was coming down again soon. Her riding mac was available. This girl, Emma, is only 15 and not very big and I was surprised that she had a "proper" mac and not a waxed coat but of course my mother had bought her one as she is madly keen on them. Clearly Emma's mackintosh was going to be far too small for me but the thought of cramming myself into it excited me treemendously.
Obviously I had to put both macs on before we left the house as I could not be seen putting two on in public at the meet. Emma's waterproof looked terribly small and I got a super feeling of restriction as soon as I pulled it on. The leg straps came half way up my thighs, the belt was incredibly high up under by bosom, the top button very tight round my neck and the collar buttoned immensely tightly round my neck. A wonderful feeling. I then put my own riding mac over the top and did it up fully as well in order to cover up the fact that I had another one on underneath. Travelling to the meet in the Landrover was unbelievable but nothing compared to how I felt when I mounted. The small mackintosh was so tight that I had to sit on it rather than let the skirt splay out over the back of the saddle and I felt the creases of it under my bottom all day.
The rain was incessant and we were all soon soaked but I kept warm and three or four people came up and said how wonderful my mackintosh looked and where could they get one. I gave them your firm's name.
At the end of the day after having two complete meltdowns due to the experience of riding in the rain to both macs, I was warm and dry. It was, I admit, a relief to take the macs off in the safety of the vehicle as we drove home but I am longing to repeat the performance!
Best wishes,
Imogen
