Mackintosh discipline – smart yet functional, demeaning for the wearer, yet promising so much for the initiated.
It conjures up thoughts of the Approved School near my own school in the 50s where the inmates had to wear mackintoshes like these as part of their uniform – perhaps, as in the picture, it WAS their uniform, so they could ‘enjoy’ all the pleasures of rubber against skin, and feeling very vulnerable as they had to stand outside their cell doors as the sergeant wardress walked slowly down between them.
The look of apprehension on the inmates faces says it all. What would happen to them today? Inspection (intimate!)?, work? punishment? exercise (in the rain of course complete with matching souwester and rubber boots – no talking allowed), providing pleasure for the sergeant or her colleagues?
Of course they may not be feeling entirely comfortable by reason of what happened yesterday – or last week? The uniformity of the mackintosh would hide the painful stripes, the over tightened corset or worse.
