The history of the raincoat

Leyland

1854

The Mannex Directory of Mid-Lancashire has an entry for W. Smith as a manufacturer 'of waterproof cloths, pipings, and washers'. The address is printed as 'Golded hill works', which I think we must read as 'Golden Hill Works.

I would like to know the relationship between this enterprise and the one that later moved to Golden Hill works, eventually becoming the Leyland & Birmingham Rubber Co., Ltd (listed below in 1907)

1907

yellow mac clocked in LeylandBarrett's Directory of Preston [and hinterland], 1907 lists under India Rubber Manufactures:

Leyland & Birmingham Rubber Co., Ltd, Golden Hill works Tel 11.

Whitehead & Roberts, Ltd., Ajax Rubber Works
