(Rubber) boot camp

Dear Lorraine,

I have read your site and enjoyed it.

I used to work for an American educational foundation. They took rebellious or in-trouble teenagers of middle-class families and put them through a boot camp type program.

The regime was very strict. They were up early and did every thing at the double all day until they fell to sleep at night.

No physical violence or restraints were used on the teenagers, but they did have to wear a strict uniform. Rubber boots and long black pvc hooded macs were the order of the day. The macs reached below the knees and had a full length zip and press studs. A belt had to be kept tight round the waist. The hood was worn up all the time and had a drawstring so it could be pulled tight to cover most of the face.

The teenagers wore sweat shirts and pants under the coat. They were of course ringing with sweat all the time. Inmates who did not reach the required daily target had to wear the uniform all night. Few failed! A three month rigorous program at this camp produced fit lean disciplined youngsters who did what they were told.

The camp was in British Columbia but took most of its custom from the U S.

Dear Piers

Thank you for this very interesting report.

Could they perhaps get round the problem of constantly wet shirt etc by rationalising the uniform so the main garment was worn next to the skin? (The shirts could probably be usefully composted?)
