I suppose girls having to stand on streetcorners in all weathers were among the first to seize on the fully waterproof raincoat as a necessity of their trade. Theorists may suggest that this is where the association between rubber mac and illicit excitement began...

Of course they would be wrong. The rubber mackintosh is electric with a charge it owes to nothing else. Why else is it always wise to wear with it rubber boots?
