JULIET BRAVO
|
BBC series
aired in UK 1980 -1985
Seasons 1 - 3 starred Stephanie Turner as Inspector Jean Darblay, who was the officer in charge of the Police Station in the fictional Lancashire town of Hartley, the first female to hold such a position. The series was created by Ian Kennedy Martin , who also created 'The Sweeney'. (He was brother of Troy Kennedy Martin, who created 'Z Cars'.) Well written and nicely acted, it was in no way gritty. David Hargreaves played her husband, Tom, who got a job as a social worker. In the first Season, Jean Darblay is frequently seen wearing a very smart grey trenchcoat (when she is not wearing her police uniform topcoat). Also seen were Wendy Alnutt at a social worker colleague of Tom who wore a light tan trenchcoat and in the episode 'Coming Back', a youngish Rachel Davies is seen in a nice red raincoat. In the following Seasons, Jean wore a similar trenchcoat but in dark red.
Seasons 4 - 6 replaced Stephanie Turner with Anna Carteret as Inspector Kate Longton. Unfortunately, someone seems to have decided it should now drive home its women's lib message, preferably with a sledgehammer! The previous seasons succeeded perfectly well with subtlety. Kate was also sometimes seen wearing a trenchcoat.
