I thought I saw some Japanese tourists outside the Tower wearing your Furness coat the other day. They, a man and a women, were wearing very long trenchcoats with hoods. White rubberised cotton looking material. Their coats had stand-up collars fastened with a strap across the mouth and chin and deepish hoods - a wet cold day. They looked very nice coats, belted and reaching to the ankles. I have not seen many like them here. The Furness looks very attractive in your excellent photos. Keep up the good work. JD Thanks JD, always nice to have a compliment. the nice pics are down to Charlie Anne though - the camera loves her, or she loves the camera or something. We have imported wonderful rubberised material from Japan in the past, but alas we can no longer get it. We do have some valued long-standing customers over there. Best Lorraine |

The photo of Thorntons brings back memories. There was a Thorntons in Belfast, was it the same company? They had a whole floor of rubberised coats and accessories, also general clothing and on the top floor a toy department - a mecca for Meccano enthusiasts. I always insisted in taking the stairs, rather than the lift, because that meant walking through the Rainwear Dept. and I lingered and brushed past the macs - happy nostalgia! Adrian PS Unfortunately I don't have a photo but may be able to get one from local archives. I remember their slogan "Thorntons - The Home of Rubber". Does anybody know? Sounds as though it might well be the same company. Hazel will perhaps consult those Trade Directories she wants us to look at... Thanks, Adrian. We would love it if you could get a photo. Lorraine |
