Only an old ripped mac

Dear Lorraine

I’m Dave from Wirral and I’m 56 and I love the shiny cotton backed pvc macs from the 1970s.

I have a small collection of them - all ladies and girls macs that I got from charity shops a few years ago.

I got the very first mac when I was fifteen from my elder cousin Helen. It’s a short red one with press studs. I just adored it when she wore it.

Helen, who was then sixteen, wore her red mac a lot as they were in fashion, but she was never that bothered about it, saying it was just “a coat”.

As time went on the mac began to rip under the arm and it was stitched up, but it ripped again and Helen didn't wear it anymore. Which was a shame! I decided to ask her if I could have it. She laughed and asked me what I wanted it for! I told her that I loved it. She said that it was only an old ripped mac - but she gave it to me.

From then on I have loved those old pvc macs and I started to collect as many as I could. It wasn't easy as I still lived at home, but I did manage to get a few.

Now it is very hard to get hold of an old cotton-backed pvc mac. Even the charity shops never get them in these days.

I wonder if you know if there is anywhere that I can get hold of more macs, I don't care what size or colour or style – or condition.

I love a mac when it has been well-worn by its owner and even ripped through wear…. Maybe someone has an old mac that they no longer want that I could purchase.

Also I would love to see photos of girls wearing their old PVC Macs in the 70s, and any stories about them , memories etc.

Keep up the great work - look forward to hearing from you

Hi DJ

I guess you have seen the pics of 60s and 70s pvc macs on the site:

I'm afraid I put up there all the pics that come my way, so I haven't any more at the moment.Maybe if people see your letter they will come up with more, and maybe have some to sell...

Best wishes

and thanks for writing

Lorraine
