Siren Suit

Dear Lorraine,
I have read your recent update and am intrigued by the children's playsuit of rubberised cotton, used by a care home...

I have some vague memories of wearing a siren suit in the 1940's in Buckinghamshire, not too far from Harpenden, and although I can't recall it I wonder whether my parents, now sadly long gone, also ever bought me a playsuit. As you know, I like rubberised material, as well as finding it functional, and have often pondered on where, if anywhere, my liking arose.

Have you dug up any more information on the playsuits? Perhaps some of your correspondents might have some information?

Best wishes,

OM

Hi OM

No, not found anything more yet.   But presumably there must be quite a few people who have memories of these I would have thought distinctly memorable articles!

I think it is very tempting to think that such intense experiences at an early stage are likely to be the source of a lifelong fascination of rubber, but imho there must be a lot more to it than that.   Plenty of people go through the experience without acquiring the fascination.

It's like blaming impermeaphilia on bedwetting, the trials of having to sleep on a rubber sheet.  Lots of people pass through this phase without acquiring a love for rubber or mackintosh (poor things!).  The most that such early intense experiences might do, imho, is awaken something that is there but not really awake, H says what I mean is a predilection.

Then the interesting thing is where does the 'predilection' come from...

H says she thinks, and I know better than disagree, it's probably like an allegy, and especially the quite common allergy towards latex, with a similar biochemical mechanism.

Thanks OM!  Hope somebody will tell us more about rubber siren suits.

L
