Making a day of it

Dear Lorraine

How nice it would be to turn the clock back to the 1950s-1960s (or earlier).

It was grand to see girls and women in rubberised and shiny mackintoshes every day of the year. I remember it so well - they enjoyed wearing them on sunny days as well as rainy days.

I remember taking a girl to the cinema in the mid-1950s in December. She simply slipped a red rubberised mac over her skirt suit, and looked swell. Younger women loved to wear them belted as they helped emphasise their lovely figures.

On the other hand, there were girls who loved to camouflage their figures. These were the ones that loved to hide inside a cape - on a fine day looking rather smug with perhaps a secretive smile like St M.

She certainly knows that a lovely cape like hers is too good just for wet days.

I still dream about a lovely girl I saw in a park on a sunny Autumn day one year. She was wearing a lovely mid-blue cape. I got talking to her and she said she had only bought the cape that day and couldn't resist putting it on almost immediately, she was so pleased with her buy. Although it was warm, she felt it looked better 'done up' and she wanted to experiment with her arms. We went and had a coffee and she undid it to reveal a smart suit. Later, we went on our way and she asked me what I thought of the hood. It looked good but as it was fine she lowered it. Like me, she lived in London so we made a day of it.

We met several times after that until I was called away.

Dear John

Nice of you to share you memories - thank you!

And thank you for the comments you have sent about particular pictures on the site. Just to say I can't always tell which pic you are referring to - my 'Tell Lorraine' form doesn't tell me which page the comment is about - so if you could say I could put more of them up...

Best wishes

Lorraine
