Dawn

She awoke to the sound of rain drumming on the roof and groaned. She had a ten minute walk to her office.

Then she remembered.

The previous evening she arrived home to find a parcel awaiting. It was from Gamages and contained the Telemac cape she had ordered in a lovely grey shade called 'gunmetal.' It had a checklined hood and was described as 'easy to wear'.

Now was an opportune time to test it.

She dressed in her work suit, navy blue with a kneelength skirt, and breakfasted. She put her high heels in a bag and pulled on her wellingtons. She slipped on her cape, fastened the buttons and put up the hood. She grabbed her handbag and shoebag and stowed them under her cape and set off, completely enclosed except her face.

She reached her office, hung up her cape, dripping water on the carpet, and changed her shoes. The people in the office gathered round full of admiration asking where she had bought it. She had brought the Gamages catalogue with her and they all had a look and took the details.

She worked through the day until 5pm when the office closed. It had stopped raining and she emerged to a lovely soft April evening. However, she put her wellingtons on and then her cape, buttoning it through except for the top button which she left undone so she could show off her new silk scarf and set off home. She had left the hood down and looked very fetching with her lovely dark hair touching her collar. She was going out with Tom that evening and was longing to show off her new acquisition.

At home, she changed out of her office suit and donned a lovely red, sleeveless dress and awaited Tom. She heard him ring the bell and he came inside. He told her they were going to see 'Kind Hearts and Coronets' at the Odeon and going to 'The Bell' afterwards. She drew on her cape to his admiration, threading her arms through the slits and fastening the buttons, after which her slim arms slid slowly out of sight.

They completed the short walk to the cinema and found seats. She took off her cape and laid it across her knee.

They both enjoyed the film, sitting hand in hand until the end, when Tom helped her on with her cape and she did up the buttons.

This time she left an arm free so that he could hold her hand.

They moved on to 'The Bell' where she enjoyed a gin and tonic and he had a pint of bitter. It was warm in the pub so she undid her cape so that Tom could admire her red dress.

At closing time she buttoned up and they walked to her flat where she made coffee and then settled on the sofa. She was still wearing her cape when they slid closer and began to kiss, but soon he undid it and it was put aside. They had a lovely cosy time for an hour or so when Tom had to leave to catch the last train.

The upshot of showing her girlfriends at work the catalogue was that several ordered Telemac capes in different colours. They looked quite distinctive on rainy days. And like Dawn, they wore them on fine days too.
