My First Taste of Heaven

I was only 4 years old and playing outside our house on a dull summer day in the Lake District.

I was in my red peddle-car when I saw Ann from next door pushing her pram up and down the drive of her house. She was the same age as me and wearing a tartan rubber mac. She was buttened up to the neck, her belt pulled tight and hooded.

Ann was a pritty girl and even at my young age I liked her very much. For no reason that I could explain I found her wearing the tarten mackintosh very attractive.

She asked me if I'd like to play and push her in the pram so that she could be the baby.  I agreed and pushed the pram from her house up and down the road then back.
She climbed out of the pram and to my suprise took off her mackintosh which I noticed was a bit damp inside and held it open asking me to put it on.

She explained that it was my turn to be pushed in the pram and that as the baby I had to wear her raincoat which I was happy to do.

She put my arms in and I noticed just how much her mackintosh rustled as she turned me round to fasten up the buttons, the smell of damp rubber was something I'll never forget, as she tightened the belt the whole garment seemed to envelop me.

I pulled her hood up over my head and fastened it under my chin. Lastly there was a rubber flap attached to the hood which went over my mouth and lower part of my nose. It was attached to buttons on the hood and heightened the smell of rubber, the hood seemed to make every sound of the mackintosh even louder.

Once in the pram I was pushed up and down for what seemed ages and didn't want it to ever stop, but all things come to an end and I eventually climbed out, by now Ann's mum was standing in the drive saying it was time for her to go in for tea.

She told me how nice I looked in Ann's mackintosh and perhaps my mum would buy me one - then we could both play out next time in our rubber raincoats.

It took another 5 years for that dream to come true and as a result of my usual bad behavior. But that's another story.
