Hello Lorraine.
My name is David. I am 61 years of age a retired postman.
For many years I have been a rainmac enthusiast, particularly, PVC, shiny plastic and rubber, SBR. I have many happy memories of mackintoshes, especially rubber. Because they were so fashionable during the 1940's and 1950's, rubber mackintoshes were everywhere then.
Mum had one with black cotton outside, cool rubber inside. When she was out shopping, I would often creep into the bedroom, make straight for the wardrobe, take the mac off the coathanger, lay it across the bed and lay on it. The rubber smell was something out of this world.
One day I wrapped the raincoat around my face, tightly and breathed in very deeply. I nearly passed-out with the lack of oxygen - but it was worth it.
Wish they would bring these macs back again. All I see now are the black wax type, or leather - not the same.
One particular day though, in the early 1970's, while I was on a London tube during the rush-hour, there were some women wearing shiny pvc macs near me, and in the crush my face was almost pressed against one. I was nearly smothered, breathing into the plastic - couldn't move.
Regards
David
