L'Amant, Jean-Jacques Annaud, France, 1991

Indochina in the twenties, a young rich chinese offer to a young french to initiate himself to the pleasures of love. Being not rich herself, she accepts. This film is a commercial compromise of the famous Marguerite Duras book. Jane March wears a pvc oilskin at the end of it. (Cire Noir)

Another correspondent comments: the mackintosh worn by Jane Marsh is probably shiny black rubber, not oilskin? And 'commercial compromise' may be unfair too. (Anon)

Yes, I think Jane March appears in a hooded SBR mac, in later scenes walking in Saigon. I believe it's a French Vietnamese production, possibly the rainwear is manufactured there. A great movie, with background music and French actress Jeanne Moreau gives commentry. (Alan D)

Yes, the IMDB says the production is French and UK and Vietnam. (LE)

trenchFinal Analysis, Phil Joanou, US, 1992

"Final Analysis", 1992, director is Phil Joanou. This thriller features such actors as Richard Gere, Kim Basinger, Uma Thurman and Eric Roberts. Gere plays a role of psychiatrist, who falls in love with the sister (Basinger) of one of his patients. She is married, but hate her husband with a passion.

In some scences Kim Basinger wears a blue trenchcoat and I think she is just marvelous in it. Also there is a scene, when husband asks her pull off her clothes, and she take off trenchcoat slowly. Beautiful woman and beautiful trenchcoat - what a perfect match.

(Artem)

Gas Food and Lodging, Alison Anders, US, 1992

Riens du Tout, Cedric Klapich, France, 1992 This bitter comedy is set in a big store and involve lots of caracters. One of them, the daughter of the director (played by the lovely Nathalie Richard) has a love story with the most rebelious worker of the team. He has an appointment with her and gets late and he asks everybody if they have seen a blonde girl with a shiny red raincoat. Hes cornes back home an she's waiting him at his door with her magnificent red pvc raincoat. And they kiss each other with the sound of the raincoat. (Cire Noir)

Cronos, Guillermo del Toro, Mexico, 1993

A schoolgirl wears a rather unusual looking bright red and blue shiny PVC raincoat. (Rainy Brian, Kingler)

Passport to Murder, David Hemmings, US and Hungary, 1993 Basically I won't recommend anyone to waste time on this movie. It's pretending to be a thriller (or maybe a comedy? Hmmm...), but does it really bad. But one thing helps it. Well, two things - actress Connie Sellecca and her grey mac she wears for a second part of this film. The movie itself is about the woman from New York, that travels to Paris for vacation, and then realise some strangers following her for no reason.
Bitter Moon, Roman Polanski, US, 1993 Features a wonderful black PVC Raincoat. (Andreas)

The woman in the lovely raincoat is Emmauelle Seigner. She is wearing the raincoat in two scenes, where she and her boyfriend (John Coyote) make S and M-games. (MacRain)

The Hawk, David Heyman, UK, 1993 Helen Mirren (best known as Insp. Jane Tennison of the 'Prime Suspect' series) plays a neurotic suburban housewife who suspects her husband is a serial killer. She wears a rather tatty beige trench coat at various stages, and in one scene we see her dash to her car wearing the coat and a plastic rain hat which she takes off in the car. When they reach the pub we also see a prostitute (the killer's next victim) in a red-tinted, hooded plastic or vinyl raincoat. (BJ)

Available from Amazon.

Another Stakeout, John Badham, US, 1993

Aka The Lookout

Aka Stakeout 2

A not-as-funny follow-on to Stakeout. Cops Chris and Bill reluctantly take Gina (O'Donnell) from the DA's office on a stakeout of a lakeside home. Rosie wears a 3 and 4 length black vinyl with white geometric print raincoat for much of the beginning of the movie... You can even hear it stretch and crinkle...(Jeff)

Available from Amazon.

Last Action Hero, Arnold Schwarzenegger, US, 1993. A movie character steps off the screen into the real life of a boy. Don't know if this counts, but in the Police Department scene, there are many characters walking around in background wearing vinyl clothes. The motorcycle cop in the red vinyl catsuit is my fave. (Jeff)

Available from Amazon.

trenchcoatChungking Express, Wong Kar Wai, Hong Kong, 1994

This movie consists of two love stories. The first one features a woman wearing trenchcoat, sunglasses and blonde wig.(Artem)

The Lifeforce ExperimentThe Lifeforce Experiment, Piers Haggard, US, 1994 Features Donald Sutherland in one of the main roles. He is an ingenious doctor MacLean, experimenting on human soul, "lifeforce", as he calls it. CIA takes interest in his work and sends special agent, named Jessica Saunders, to investigate what's actually going on in MacLean's lab. There is a couple of scenes, where Jessica wears a long grey trenchcoat. (Artem)

The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain, Christopher Monger, UK, 1995

The story is set in Wales in the middle of the Great War, when the government of the time saw the need to draw a firm line between hills and mountains (for the purposes of safety rules for aircraft navigation - something like that). Anyway in the particular village of the story there is some high ground which nearly meets the new definition of a 'mountain' - but not quite... So the villagers devise a plan to raise its top.

It is towards the climax of the film, when the scenes are actually shot in a downpour, that one of the two stars wears a rubber lined cape as he drives around in an open top car . He wears the cape for quite a while as the action gears up to the final measurement of the improved 'hill'l, and the eventual declaration that the hill is indeed a mountain. I think the film was in black and white, but it certainly features a classic rubber-lined cape.

Twelve Monkeys, Terry Gilliam, USA, 1995

This is another one of those films where doctors wear shiny clear PVC raincoats over their white uniforms. (Rainy Brian, Kingler)

silver macJoe's Apartment, John Payson, US, 1996

With Jerry O'Conell, Megan Ward and Robert Vaughn.

Joe's apartment is not very clean. But Joe's girlfriend is a smart woman who wears in one scene a nice silver trenchcoat (not belted, what a pity !). (Bernard)

Available from Amazon.

One Fine Day, Michael Hoffman, US, 1996 In most street scenes, Michelle Pfeiffer wears a beige trench coat. The best shot is when she first meets George Clooney and has a raging row with him from under a bright red umbrella (which she must have thought of hitting him with!). The brolly reappears right at the end, and throughout the film there are people in the background in various kinds of rainwear. I venture the trench and umbrella suits her better than the sou-wester, although of course she'd look OK in a coal sack!! (BJ)

Available from Amazon.

Temps de Chien, Jean Marboeuf, France, 1996 A film about power in the working world and how it corrupts people. Unfortunately, the demonstration is not convincing! But at the end of it, Fabienne Chaudat is wearing a heavy yellow see thru plastic mac with the hugest collar you can think of and Josianne Leveque wears a green plastic cape with a blue and red collar and yellow and orange arm-slits. Really excentric but pretty plastic macs. (Cire Noir)
Saltwater Moose, Stuart Margolm, Canada, 1996 Although this is a squeaky clean family film about a boy who befriends a moose in the wilds of Canada, towards the end of the film Lolita Davidovitch spends several minutes getting soaked in a thin, hooded, full length cagoule. (PM)

Available from Amazon.

The Pallbearer, Matt Reeves, US, 1996 Barbara Hershey, almost unrecognizeable as a blonde, wears what looks to be a black & gold striped pvc balmacaan-style full length raincoat in a couple of brief scenes.(William)

Available from Amazon.

Les sours soleil, Jeannot Szwarc, France, 1996

In a brief scene of that mediocre comedy, Clémentine Célarié is wearing a translucent mac. (Cire Noir)

plastic macUp Close and Personal, John Arvet, US, 1996 One of those typical American sentimental films with a nice couple (Michele Pfeiffer and Robert Redford). Both of them are journalists (not corrupted). Redford is an experienced one and Michele Pfeiffer is a beginner. In her first try to impress him, as she is doing the weather report on TV, she wears a yellow pvc mc with souwester. Charming ! (Cire Noir)

Available from Amazon.

A Life Less Ordinary, Danny Boyle, US, 1997 Holly Hunter and Delroy Lindo are wearing the plastic rainwear during their survailance work on Ewan McGregor and Cameron Diaz. (W.K)

raincoatShooting Fish, Stefan Schwartz, UK, 1997

In an otherwise unforgettable movie, Shooting Fish, a young Kate Beckinsale wears two 3 and 4 lengths macks, tugging at them surrussously from time to time. Given her attire in Underworld, and the interview she gave where she  talked of the 'surprising' discovery of the comfort of whole body  latex catsuit, one wonders if the discovery was not just waiting to happen. (FRS)

Available from Amazon.

Grace of my Heart, Allison Anders, US, 1997 About a young girl struggling to make it in the music business in the '60's, she wants to make it as a singer, but is recognized more by her songwriting abilities. In several scenes, the main character, played by Illeana Douglas, sports a black shiny pvc (?) mac. (LH)

Available from Amazon.

Tiré à Part, Bernard Rapp, France, 1997 A detective story in the pure British style directed by French tv journalist (who signs here his first fiction). Hannah Gordon is the typical detective - an old and grumpy but devoted secretary. In a bref scene, you can see her see-thru translucent plastic raincoat. (Cire Noir)
Clockwatchers, Jill Sprecher, USA, 1997 Shy office temp Toni Collette has several scenes where she looks absolutely delicious in a full-length polyurethane or pvc raincoat with a snap front in powder blue with flower print. She completes the ensemble with a matching umbrella. One of the film's subplots involves a series of thefts by the office kleptomaniac. The umbrella is one of the stolen items and there is a scene where Collette tails the thief home in the rain, with the raincoat pulled over her head to stay dry, and sunglasses on (to disguise herself?). I always get excited by watching her scenes in the raincoat (there's even a scene where she takes it off and you can hear the "swish" sounds), and I've probably worn out the tape by now - time to upgrade to DVD! The raincoat scenes save what is otherwise a very boring movie. (William)

Available from Amazon.

Eve's Bayou, Kasi Lemmons, US, 1997 Has a scene with an african-american girl in a blue plastic raincoat, I think with matching hat...(liatris)

Available from Amazon.

Hard Rain, Mark Gordon and Gary Levinsohn, US, 1997. As you might expect from the title, Hard Rain features wall-to-wall rain slickers and oilskins, as well as Betty White playing a cantankerous local housewife who makes life difficult for everybody. At various stages she wears a hooded plastic rain coat, with or without a peak rain bonnet, and carries a floral-patterned umbrella. (BJ)

Trenchcoat

Place Vendome, Nicole Garcia, France, 1998

This one is my favourite of all, as Catherine Deneuve wears two different trenchcoats in this movie. (Artem)
Pecker, John Waters, US, 1988 After about 15 minutes of this decent film you see a lady trying on a long multicoloured patterned transparent PVC raincoat. (Rainy Brian)
Quand un ange passe, Bertrand Van Effenterre, France, 1998

In one scene,. Félicité Du Jeu is wearing a blue pvc raincoat with a white zip. In the street, one woman wears a shiny black raincoat with white spots. (Cire Noir)

Little Voice, Mark Herman, UK, 1998 Brenda Blethyn wears a short, tight fitting, leopard-print PVC trench in one scene. Given the character's inflated opinion of herself, she probably finds herself much sexier than we do. (William)

Available from Amazon.

Le Cousin, Alain Corneau, France, 1998

In one short scene, one of the prostitutes on the side walk is wearing a short translucent plastic trench. (Cire Noir)

The Butcher Boy, Neil Jordan, US, 1998 Set in rural Ireland in the 1950's and 1960's. One lady appears on a couple of occasions in a long green plastic mac. (SH)

StigmataStigmata, Rupert Wainwright, US, 1999 It rains a good deal in this film and we get two see two raincoats. One of them is a sky-blue bell-type polyurethane raincoat complete with raised hood and the other a non-shiny black PVC waterproof that only glistens in the rain. (Rainy Brian)
East is East, Damien O'Donnell, UK, 1999 (MacRain)

Ultimo Metro, Andrea Prandstraller, Italy, 1999

A short erotic movie produced by Tinto Brass, an italian erotic movie director. The story is simple: a lady and a boy occasionally have seen each other on opposite subway platforms at midnight, and she decides to do a striptease for him. For a good part of the movie she wears nothing, but a white mac. Thrilling! (Artem)

Dick, Andrew Fleming, France and Canada and US, 1999

Kirsten Dunst wears a really shiny PVC mac; clip on YouTube shows 2 or 3 minutes of her running in it.  (Anon)

Another admirer adds: Both the female stars (Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams) wear plastic raincoats in one of the most memorable scenes in the movie! Kirsten Dunst wears a blue and purple vinyl raincoat and Michelle Williams wears a pink semi-transparent raincoat. Absolutely stunning!

Available from Amazon.

Tea with Mussolini, Franco Zeffirelli, Italy and UK, 1999

In the first hour Joan Plowright is seen wearing a lovely olive green mackintosh cape with a broad brimmed hat. She was wearing it undone and holding it together when she walked. Broad brimmed hats complement capes a treat. (John)

I do hope this is a mackintosh cape . (LE)

Available from Amazon.

Six Pack, Alain Berberian, France, 1999

In this french modern film noir type (not always very convincing), there is a very long sequence featuring proeminently Betty Bomonde in a magnificent black vinyl raincoat. (Cire Noir)
