1960

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, Karel Reisz, UK, 1960

Albert Finney, Shirley Anne Field and Rachel Roberts star in this 'kitchen sink' drama from the pen of Alan Sillitoe.

In several scenes Shirley Anne Field (as Doreen) wears a shortie raincoat (very fashionable in the early sixties), but it is only in the last of these, when she visits Finney (as Arthur Seaton) in his bedroom, that she wears it belted. (Dave D)

Midnight Lace, Dave Miller, USA, 1960

This film stars Doris Day and Rex Harrison and seeks to be a Hitchcock-style thriller. It's set in London but filmed in Hollywood. Doris Day keeps hearing a threatening voice - or is she going crazy? At one point someone tries to push our Doris under a red bus (stop cheering at the back there!). In this scene she wears a dark red pelerine style raincoat (not too dissimilar to the Lady Hamilton). There are several hooded raincoats and plastic macs in evidence in the bus queue and passers-by in the streets in this sequence. Later in the film Myrna Loy sports a plastic raincoat. (Dave D) Remake for tv, 1981.

Tirez sur le pianiste
François Truffaut, 1960, France
In this classic of the french "nouvelle vague" Marie Dubois and Charles Aznavour are both in trenchcoats. (André)
Let's Make Love, George Cukor, 1960, USA Marilyn Munroe wears a trench coat, with all the "ingredients" of the style - the true trench! Thrilling! And great to see her in the streets of New York with co-star Yves Montand, also in a trench. (André)
Les Yeux sans Visage, Georges Franju, France, 1960 Actress : Alida Valli
One of the very few great "fantastic" french film directed by extraordinary Georges Franju. A famous surgeon (Pierre Brasseur) wants to save his daughter who has lost her face in an accident by trying to transplant the face of a kidnapped girl. His assistant is Alida Valli who wears a SBR black raincoat in all the outside scenes. (Cire Noir)
The Life of Suzie Wong, Richard Quine, UK, 1960.
During typhoon people evacuate shanty town. Many people in the pouring rain and mud dressed in raincoats. (PE)
L'amant de cinq jours, de Broca, France, 1960 Also known as 'Infidelity' and 'The Five Day Lover'. Features Jean Seberg and Jean-Pierre Cassell. Jean plays the part of a smart married woman who has an affair lasting five days. While seen with her husband she is conventionally dressed, but whenever she meets her lover she wears a Shiny Black Mackintosh which is very smart. As her affair takes up a large part of the film, her mackintosh is much in evidence. Unfortunately the film does not appear to be available on Video or DVD, but there is a large still from the film on the 'Saint Jean'website(PM)
Zarte Haut in schwarzer Seide aka Daniella by Night, Max Pécas, West Germany / France, 1961

trenchFlame in the Streets, Roy Ward Baker, UK, 1961 Brenda de Palma wears the trenchcoat in this over-written exploration of racial tension in the British post World War II working class. Sylvia Syms and John Mills join in, screenplay by Ted Willis, adapting his own play "Hot Summer Night" for the screen. Produced by Somerset Films, otherwise unknown. (H. Nomination by André)
Payroll, Sidney Hayers, UK, 1961

A routine crime drama starring Michael Craig as ruthless villain, Johnny Mellors, who plans a security van heist. Francoise Prevost plays Katie Pearson, whose husband (William Lucas) has passed information to the crooks. Being rather fickle (as women sometimes are), she decides her bread might be better buttered if she runs off with Mellors, and it might even have jam on it if she runs off with the money instead. One of the security guards gets murdered in the heist and his wife, Jackie (Billie Whitelaw), decides that for her there's nothing sweeter than vengeance.
There is a short scene where Katie wears a white trenchmac belted tightly. At the end of the film there is a longer sequence where Jackie wears a belted light raincoat with a fake fur collar. (Dave D)
A bridge to the sun, Etienne Périer, USA/France, 1961

Carroll Baker wears a trench coat in two films, this one and Harlow. In A Bridge to the Sun she plays the part of an American young lady married to a Japanese, with Word War 2 in the background. I've personally never seen the film - just seen a still of her wearing a classic trench coat with a belt. (André)

A Taste Of Honey, Tony Richardson, GB, 1961

At the start of this film Dora Bryan is wearing a plastic raincoat as she and her daughter played by Rita Tushingham are seen leaving their flat without playing the rent. (Bob)

Paris Blues, Martin Ritt, US, 1961

Starring Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Sydney Poitiers and Diahann Carroll Paris Blues captures well the mood of Paris in the early 60's. In a few scenes Joanne Woodward wears a Burberry. She looks great in it walking with Paul in the rain, and when she goes into her hotel room and makes coffee. There is also great music featuring Louis Amstrong with Serge Reggiani on guitar. (André)

Le puit aux trois vérités, Francois Villiers, France, 1961 Starring Catherine Spaak , Jean Claude Brialy and Michele Morgan, this play upon the "French new wave movie" told the story of the relationship between a woman and her daughter and the lover. Spaak is to be seen wearing a trench coat early 60's style. (Catherine Spaak, French actress, was the daughter of Belgian writer and director Charles Spaak who was the brother of a well-known Minister Paul Henry Spaak.) Antoinette Spaak, daughter of Paul Henry, wears a Burberry - as seen by me once in the streets of Brussels. (André)
Wild in the Country, Philip Dunne, US, 1961 Starring Elvis Presley. Both Tuesday Weld and Hope Lang wear the classic trench coat in several scenes, and there's one where Christina Crawford (yes, Joan's daughter) is dashing from a car to a motel room wearing not only a beige trench, but also a clear plastic rain bonnet! (What a thrill!). (LH)
Il posto; Ermanno Olmi, Italy, 1961.

(Director Olmi won the Festival of Cannes in 1978 with L'albero degli Zoccoli"). Il Posto was is second of third film. It tells the story of an adolescent who needed to work because his family, including a younger brother needed support. His parents wanted him to get a steady job, so he took public examinations to gain qualifications. In Milan, he met a girl who was also taking the examinations. Between the exams they walk together in the street. Stopping before a clothes shop where a trench coat was shown, the girl confesses her liking for trench coats.

In an another scene in a snack bar a young lady wears a white trench coat. Later when the central figure needs a raincoat he is shown trying several styles before buying one. His mother tells him it is too expensive.

Olmi presents the particular relationship and the two characters with skill. Fetishism is here displayed in a singular way - in French through "sous entendu" , and in Italian "ci piaconno gli impermeabili".

trenchcoatBreakfast at Tiffany's, Blake Edwards, US, 1961 At the end of the movie there is a very long sequence (about fifteen minutes I think) starting with Aubrey Hepburn and George Peppard sitting in a taxi cab. He is in a white balmacaan (like both men and women wore back then) raincoat. He hands her her cat wrapped in her white cotton trenchcoat. She stretches her legs out, puts her stockings and shoes on; then her raincoat and then ties the belt.

They have an argument. She throws the cat out of the taxi into the rain. George Peppard gets out of the taxi to find the cat. She comes to her senses; gets out of the taxi and in a panicky and desperate manner helps him to search for the cat in the rain. The appearance of her cotton cloth raincoat in the rain takes on an appealing shiny wet rubbery look.(Jim)

Lolita, Stanley Kubrick, UK, 1962 In one scene, in a car accident one of the main caracters gets hit by a car in the pouring rain. One lady dresses in shiny wet raincoat (nylon or plastic?) and rainhat holding an umbrella over an injured man. Her raincoat gets soaking wet and the water is running down on her coat. Another older lady in plastic raincoat taking pictures. (PEC)
The Manchurian Candidate, John Frankenheimer, US, 1962 This is the original version with Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Angela Lansbury and Janet Leigh. A lecture at a ladies' horticultural society, a scarf, a gun, a lake (the kind people jump into), and a deck of cards (especially the Queen of Hearts) all feature in this film. But when Lorraine shows you the Queen of Macs, all you will remember is Janet Leigh in the raincoat she wears in one scene. (Dave D)
The War Lover, Philip Leacock, UK/USA, 1962
Shirley Ann Field, lover of WW2 US bomber pilot Robert Wagner, wears a three-quarter length white riding mac (unbelted) in most of her outdoor scenes, set largely in Cambridge. The flying sequences feature prominently USAF WW2 oxygen masks in SBR.
The Day of the Triffids, Steve Sekely, GB, 1962 In a segment of this film one of the characters appears in a highly glossy raincoat. I'm not sure if it is rubber or PVC but it sure looks great in the movie. (PVC)

Le couteau dans la plaie (Die dritte Dimension), Anatole Litvak, France/Italy, 1962

With Antony Perkins and lovely young Sophia Loren, who wears a wonderful black vinyl raincoat in several scenes. (HGG)
A Kind of Loving, John Schlesinger, GB, 1962  In this film June Ritchie plays a rejected girlfriend. On a wet night she meets her ex and is wearing a rubberlined cotton mackintosh. The scene lasts 3 or 4 minutes and the drops of light rain can clearly be seen on the mackintosh. (Bob)
Twice Round The Daffodils, Gerald Thomas, UK, 1962

Sheila Hancock wears a belted double textured riding mack when visiting her boyfriend in hospital. Quite noisy. (Dannimac)

Le Diable et les dix commandements, Julien Duvivier, La France, 1962 A so-called "film à sketchs", one with several short subjects. There was a fashion for this kind of film in the French and Italian cinema in the early 60's, with several legends of the movie screen - Fernandel, Alain Delon, Danielle Darrieux. Co-starring were Micheline Presle and Mel Ferre, who played the role of a young woman jealous of her friend and in love with the jewels. She wears his black vinyl trench coat with great class. (André)
Dr. No, Terence Young, UK, 1962 This amusing James Bond classic has scenes of Dr. No's nerve center. But even Dr. No's full plastic suit is no match for James Bond's daring-do, when he's thrown into the waste pool.(SK)

The Girl Who Knew Too Much (La ragazza che sapeva troppo), Mario Bava, Italy, 1963 Leticia Roman wears a black vinyl raincoat. Fun to see this in the sunny city of Rome. Echo of Françoise Arnoul in Orage, 1954, also shot in Rome. (André)
L'ainé des ferchaux Jean Pierre Melville, France, 1963

Based on the novel of George Simenon, this film has Jean paul Belmondo playing a remarkable part. Actress Malvina Silberberg, known only for her role in L'ainé des ferchaux, wears a classic trench coat. Jean Paul also wears raincoat, in black vinyl.
(André)
Black Zoo, Robert Gordon, USA, 1963

Dull film enlivened by a fight scene, in driving rain, between wife, dressed in a tightly belted trenchcoat, and husband. She ends up with arm twisted up her back and her charms nearly bursting through the stretched material at the front. (Dannimac)

The Leather Boys, Sidney J. Furie, GB, 1963 This film about motorbikers features two scenes with Rita Tushingham wearing a shny black PVC raincoat. (Bob)
La Belle Vie, Robert Enrico, France, 1963 Actress : Josee Steiner

This film had problems with censorship at the time because of the Algerian war. Frederic (Frederic de Pasquale) comes back from two years in Algeria. He starts a new life and meets a girl working for a hairdresser (Josee Steiner). The beautiful love story ends brutally when Frederic is called back to Algeria for the war. Josee Steiner wears a short PVC shiny raincoat. She is absolutely lovely in it and acts with great feeling. Why haven't we seen her more after this ? (Cire Noir)

L'appartement des Filles, Michel Deville, France/West Germany/Italy, 1963

A film that I have never seen because I was under 16 when it came round. Mylène Demongeot wore a classic trench coat. Costarring was Samy Frey. I have seen a picture of her in "Vogue" from the early 80's in a piece which reported the"return" in fashion of the trench in this period and showed pictures of many films. I have a book about the French cinema and Mylène was photogaphed wearing her trench in a car. (André)

Charade, Stanley Donen, USA, 1963 Audrey Hepburn in her trenchcoat. (André)
Billy Liar, John Schlesinger, GB, 1963 One of Billy's many girifiends, the one played by Gwendoline Watts, appears in a shiny white PVC raincoat . Another woman in the street is clearly wearing a rubberlined mackintosh. (Bob)
Irma la Douce, Billy Wilder, US, 1963

Lots of plastic raincoats here. A police-officer falls in love with a prostitute. There is a scene in which nearly all the girls working in the street are wearing milky-white and blue transparent PVC raincoats. In another scene, the ex-police-officer walks with Irma to her apartment, she wearing a transparent 'white' PVC raincoat. The sounds when she is mounting the stairs and puts off her coat in her room is ... dazzling...(Paul S)

WK adds: Shirley McLaine is one of those in a translucent plastic mac.

A New Kind of Love, Melville Shavelson, US, 1963 A few female fashion models are wearing plastic macs. (WK) More enthusiasm from Milo: shows a lot on American Movie Classics (AMC) in the USA... and excellent! esp. two women in transparent coats looking very sexy riding in a carriage with Paul Newman. Paul S adds: "Samantha" is a Spanish version of this title. Features Joanne Woodward, Eva Gabor and Maurice Chevalier in addition to Paul Newman.
rainwaerCircus World, (aka The Magnificent Showman (UK)), Henry Hatherway, US, 1964
This film stars John Wayne as Matt Masters, owner of a circus-cum-Wild West show in Edwardian times (a bit like Buffalo Bill Cody), who many years before the story starts had an affair with a trapeze artist, Lili Alfredo (Rita Hayworth). Her husband found out and committed suicide by deliberately falling to his death during the act. Lili left the circus abandoning her small daughter, Toni, to whom Masters acts as a surrogate father. Now Masters decides to take the circus on a European tour, but his long time associate, Cap Carson (Lloyd Nolan) realises he really wants to look for Lili. Toni (Claudia Cardinale) is being wooed by trick-rider Steve McCabe (John Smith). Oh, and the dead man's brother Aldo Alfredo (Richard Conte) still works for the circus. Needless to say, Lili turns up, rejoins the circus, but decides her true identity should be kept from Toni. The hell it is!
It was going to be directed by Frank Capra, but he quit after a spat with James Edward Grant, Wayne's long-time personal screenwriter. Hathaway was brought in, but Grant certainly tampered with Ben Hecht's original script. What was intended to be an exciting, spectacular film, emerges as a stodgy mish-mash. It's not so much the lines as the very structure of the screenplay that is all wrong. Wayne blamed Grant and fired him.
There is a brief scene where it is raining heavily and Toni wears a pale yellow slicker. Just prior to this, we see Cap in a black one. (Dave D)
Wonderful Life, Sidney J. Furie, UK, 1964 Susan Hamphire makes a lovely lady - with all that British class she is great in a trenchcoat. With Cliff Richard in this movie, she offers a "Greta Garbo" look against a North African backdrop. (André)
Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, Jacques Demy, France/West Germany, 1964.

Catherine Deneuve wears trench coat in this film, and also in several others: La Chamade, 1968 ;La sirène du Mississipi, 1969; Le Choc, 1980, with Alain Delon;L'argent des autres, 1983; a small scene in a Burberry, and more recently in Place Vendome. (André)

Une Ravissante Idiote, Edouard Molinaro, France/ Italy, 1964

With Brigitte Bardot and Anthony Perkins. A typical sixties comedy with a spy subject. I saw it in Bruxelles when I was 15, and I had to tell told my school friend about it, because a film with Brigitte Bardot was for the time "osé" ['bold'?] and sulfurous. Times they are changing!

The Americanization of Emily, Arthur Hiller, US, 1965

Julie Andrews wears a trench coat. Co-stars James Coburn and James Gardner. Located in England during World War 2, she played the part of a British woman soldier, of course in love with an American officer, a smash with his British accent and uniform (including trench coat). The best scene was one with heavy rain in tha arms of James Coburn , the trench coat wet (Julie Andrews', that is).

Michele Mercier (from Angélique fame) plays the part of a young prostitute. In a few scenes she wore a classic trench coat, belted, one of them a great rain scene.
(André)

Torn Curtain, Alfred Hitchcock, US, 1966

This is a great one! Julie Andrews wears an off white trench coat as she and Paul Newman try and escape the "Iron Curtain". Julie wears her coat well, buttoned and belt drawn tight, with the collar turned up in some scenes. She wears the coat for a long time in the movie, even rides a bicycle with it on! The only dissapointment to a trench coat afficionado is that it has no epaulettes on the shoulders, but Julie really wears that coat well! I would say it is either a Burberry or London Fog. Rent or buy a copy of the tape, you will not be disappointed! (Ron)

I agree with Ron - Julie Andrews has always given me a thrill! - A superb model of trenchcoat even without epaulettes. (André)

Made in the USA, Jean-Luc Godard, France, 1966

The movie stars Anna Karina. I have not seen the movie - it is not available in USA, but it is available on DVD in Europe, on Amazon's France website. I hear that Anna Karina can be seen wearing her beige trench coat through many scenes in the movie. (Ron)

Harper, Jack Smight, USA, 1966 Paul Newman co-stars with lovely Pamela Tiffin and Lauren Bacall. At the beginning Pamela wears a trench coat, first going for a plane and then in another scene a little bit later. Great to see her in it under the California sun. Paul Newman co-starred 4 times with actresses wearing trench coats, with his wife Joanne Woodward in two films, with Pamela Tiffin in Harper (Newman plays a detective), and with Pier Angeli in 1956 in Somebody up there Likes Me. (André)

Fleur d'oseille, Georges Lautner, France, 1967 Finally out in dvd, this film offers Mireille Darc in a sort of trench coat, and lovely Anouk Ferjac in a parka, sometimes with the hood up. Hepburn wears her trench coat for a trip in a car and has to get out and push at one stage. She also is seen wearing a nice ensemble of black ciré noir trousers, 501 style, and little jacket. Leslie H. Martinson, UK, 1967

Raquel Welch stars in this typical tongue-in-cheek Sixties' romp. It gives Raquel a good excuse for several changes of costume, and of special interest to imperistes (i.e. mac-lovers) is the delightful little white mini-trenchcoat that she wears in a longish sequence on a train in the later stages of the film. It doesn't have any buttons - all the fastenings are straps. (Dave D)
Accident, Joseph Losey, GB, 1967

Ann Firbank wears a Black PVC raincoat. (Bob)

Le Dimanche de la vie, Jean Herman, La France, 1967 This was not a good movie ! The heroine wears only a belted "trench cire noir" in a small scene. (André)

The Shuttered Room , David Greene, GB, 1967 The female lead is played by Carol Lynley, with Flora Robson. Here's a description from Halliwell's Film Guide. "Returning to her childhood home on an island off the New Enland coast, a girl and her husband are subjected to terror and violence." The film also starred Gig Young and Oliver Reed. (Rainman)
A great black rubber movie set in Nova Scotia. Everyone wears shiny black rubber slickers. (Sandy)
2 ou 3 choses que je sais d'elle, Jean-Luc Godard, France, 1967 A very special (and boring) movie about a housewife, who earns some money as a prostitute, while her husband is at work and the children in the kindergarden. However, she is dressed in a blue raincoat during the whole movie. (Macrain)
Bye Bye Braverman, Sidney Lumet, US, 1968 In a stonemasons, roughly half way through the film, you see a lady wearing a very shiny black PVC raincoat. It's a bright sunny day, so it shines even more! (RainyBrian)
nylon overallUp The Junction, Peter Collinson, UK, 1968

Suzy Kendall appears in a red PVC mac in two scenes: The first is during clocking out  on a rainy afternoon with Maureen Lipman in a beige and green check PVC mac along with other actresses in PVC and other rainwear. The second is two glimpses when she mounts a motorbike and is later looking under a lorry at the crash victim. (Gary)

H adds: All the nice pics I can find feature nylon overalls - I think- not rainwear. Anybody help?

60s macThe Helicopter Spies, Boris Sagal, US, 1968

This is a good example of how, if you take a third-rate two-part episode of a TV series well past its sell-by date, cobble it together and give it a cinema release, you will get a fifth-rate film. The series in question is "The Man from UNCLE" starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum as Napoleon Solo and Ilya Kuriakin. The reason for its inclusion here is that in it Carol Lynley wears an orange mini-length raincoat for quite a long sequence towards the middle. Eventually she gets the chance to test just how waterproof it really is. One suspects 'not very', as the answer is never revealed.    (Dave D)
The Producers, Mel Brooks, US, 1968
