| Midnight Lace, Dave Miller, USA, 1960 | This film stars Doris Day and Rex Harrison and seeks to be a Hitchcock-style thriller. It's set in London but filmed in Hollywood. Doris Day keeps hearing a threatening voice - or is she going crazy? At one point someone tries to push our Doris under a red bus (stop cheering at the back there!). In this scene she wears a dark red pelerine style raincoat (not too dissimilar to the Lady Hamilton). There are several hooded raincoats and plastic macs in evidence in the bus queue and passers-by in the streets in this sequence. Later in the film Myrna Loy sports a plastic raincoat. As her affair takes up a large part of the film, her mackintosh is much in evidence. A routine crime drama starring Michael Craig as ruthless villain, Johnny Mellors, who plans a security van heist. Francoise Prevost plays Katie Pearson, whose husband (William Lucas) has passed information to the crooks. Being rather fickle (as women sometimes are), she decides her bread might be better buttered if she runs off with Mellors, and it might even have jam on it if she runs off with the money instead. One of the security guards gets murdered in the heist and his wife, Jackie (Billie Whitelaw), decides that for her there's nothing sweeter than vengeance. There is a short scene where Katie wears a white trenchmac belted tightly. At the end of the film there is a longer sequence where Jackie wears a belted light raincoat with a fake fur collar. | Il posto; Ermanno Olmi, Italy, 1961. | (Director Olmi won the Festival of Cannes in 1978 with L'albero degli Zoccoli"). Il Posto was is second of third film. It tells the story of an adolescent who needed to work because his family, including a younger brother needed support. His parents wanted him to get a steady job, so he took public examinations to gain qualifications. In Milan, he met a girl who was also taking the examinations. Between the exams they walk together in the street. Stopping before a clothes shop where a trench coat was shown, the girl confesses her liking for trench coats. In an another scene in a snack bar a young lady wears a white trench coat. Later when the central figure needs a raincoat he is shown trying several styles before buying one. His mother tells him it is too expensive. Olmi presents the particular relationship and the two characters with skill. Fetishism is here displayed in a singular way - in French through "sous entendu" , and in Italian "ci piaconno gli impermeabili". (André) |

At the end of the movie there is a very long
sequence (about fifteen minutes I think) starting with Aubrey Hepburn
and George Peppard sitting in a taxi cab. He is in a white balmacaan (like
both men and women wore back then) raincoat. He hands her her cat wrapped
in her white cotton trenchcoat. She stretches her legs out, puts her stockings
and shoes on; then her raincoat and then ties the belt.
They have an argument. She throws the cat out of the taxi into the rain. George Peppard gets out of the taxi to find the cat. She comes to her senses; gets out of the taxi and in a panicky and desperate manner helps him to search for the cat in the rain. The appearance of her cotton cloth raincoat in the rain takes on an appealing shiny wet rubbery look.(Jim) |

This film stars John Wayne as Matt Masters, owner of a circus-cum-Wild West show in Edwardian times (a bit like Buffalo Bill Cody), who many years before the story starts had an affair with a trapeze artist, Lili Alfredo (Rita Hayworth). Her husband found out and committed suicide by deliberately falling to his death during the act. Lili left the circus abandoning her small daughter, Toni, to whom Masters acts as a surrogate father. Now Masters decides to take the circus on a European tour, but his long time associate, Cap Carson (Lloyd Nolan) realises he really wants to look for Lili. Toni (Claudia Cardinale) is being wooed by trick-rider Steve McCabe (John Smith). Oh, and the dead man's brother Aldo Alfredo (Richard Conte) still works for the circus. Needless to say, Lili turns up, rejoins the circus, but decides her true identity should be kept from Toni. The hell it is! It was going to be directed by Frank Capra, but he quit after a spat with James Edward Grant, Wayne's long-time personal screenwriter. Hathaway was brought in, but Grant certainly tampered with Ben Hecht's original script. What was intended to be an exciting, spectacular film, emerges as a stodgy mish-mash. It's not so much the lines as the very structure of the screenplay that is all wrong. Wayne blamed Grant and fired him. There is a brief scene where it is raining heavily and Toni wears a pale yellow slicker. Just prior to this, we see Cap in a black one. (Dave D) |

This is a great one! Julie Andrews wears an off white trench coat as she and Paul Newman try and escape the "Iron Curtain". Julie wears her coat well, buttoned and belt drawn tight, with the collar turned up in some scenes. She wears the coat for a long time in the movie, even rides a bicycle with it on! The only dissapointment to a trench coat afficionado is that it has no epaulettes on the shoulders, but Julie really wears that coat well! I would say it is either a Burberry or London Fog. I hear that Anna Karina can be seen wearing her beige trench coat through many scenes in the movie. This is a good example of how, if you take a third-rate two-part episode of a TV series well past its sell-by date, cobble it together and give it a cinema release, you will get a fifth-rate film. The series in question is "The Man from UNCLE" starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum as Napoleon Solo and Ilya Kuriakin. The reason for its inclusion here is that in it Carol Lynley wears an orange mini-length raincoat for quite a long sequence towards the middle. Eventually she gets the chance to test just how waterproof it really is. One suspects 'not very', as the answer is never revealed. (Dave D) |
