The Australian rubber raincoat

A number of letters have mentioned the SBR macs worn to school in Australia in the 40's - 5o's. These were mostly worn by boys but girls usually wore a rubber-lined raincoat with detacheable hood. These were in an attractive red or green colour and like the boys were strong and durable.

When the school fashion finished about the mid 60's there was a delightful period when the shiny black rubber raincoat became a fashion item for girls. The material was chosen carefully for its shine and quality and was made looser fitting and more shapely - a lovely way to brighten up the day!

I still remember one day walking to work in Collins Street Melbourne when a lovely young lass walked out of the Australia Hotel wearing gum boots (wellingtons) and a lovely shiny mac and souwester. I couldn't believe my eyes and as she made for the tram she waved to someone at an upper window. I was able to admire across the aisle. Unfortunately I didn't have the courage to approach her and the memory is all I have.

P.S. I still have an SBR raincoat from the 50's in reasonable condition. It was made by Firestone and has that wonderful rubber smell missing in recent manufacture.
