Whether you like the classic appeal of a trench-coat or the kooky look of shiny P.V.C., your raincoat should have bright ideas. Light pack-away macs are in jungle stripes, slick tartans or flower prints: showerproofed and rubberized tweeds look like cloth but repel rain; traditional oilskin makes a brilliant splash, and plastic gets finished like ponyskin. Proofed poplins of every shade come in classic or casual styles, Many are belted. Several reverse. All are bright fashion buys.
Wet days can be cold days, too, so choose a coat with insulation. Linings give you warmth without the bulk of an extra sweater. Look for them in Courtelle fleece - they're snug and washable, too. Wool is warm in gay travel-rug checks, And quilting lightly central-heats. Sewn in or detachable, linings contrast or complement the colour of your coat. They can be bought separately, too. Heat up a poplin or leather coat with foam-back leopard- print lining, 59s. 6d.: luxurious coney from 8 gn.
Not all raincoats are 100 per cent waterproof, so know the difference before you buy. Shower- proofed fabrics withstand average rain, but may wet through in a downpour. Waterproofed materials like oilskin, P. V .C. or rubberized tweed - with specially treated seams - won't let in even torrential rain. Check label instructions for whether to wash or dry-clean. Proofed poplins wash and drip-dry six or seven times before re-proofing is necessary. Shake off excess water and dry away from radiators or open fires. Never spirit-clean P.V.C. Wipe with a damp cloth or warm (not hot) soapy water. Never iron or dry near fierce heat. Dry-clean suedette-and showerproofed tweeds. Rubberized tweeds should be wet cleaned by your cleaners. The first two need re-proofing, but Dry Cleaners will do so. Or do it yourself with Dylon's 8s. 6d. waterproofing aerosol spray. Order through Dylon stockists.
