Impermeo Pop Trivia

Today's obit for Freddie Garrity caused me to have a quick look for resumé / nostalgia purposes, and I unearthed the fact that after F+the Dreamers chart days were over they had a B-side called 'Gaberdine Mac' (spelling as per the website http://www.45-rpm.org.uk/dirf/freddied.htm.

I'll try to track it down of course, but think the chances are remote. Might add that I have heard some of the later now-forgotten F+the-D records, and would say the group did begin to be less wacky and more oriented towards the odd. eg 'Brown and Porter (Meat Exporters) Lorry' was a song they acquired from the wierder side of Manfred Mann's repertoire. So I'm hopeful of uneathing a dark classic, you never know!

Meanwhile, There is stronger evidence by the day that Kate Bush may actually be one of our number!

EXHIBIT A. Passing a charity shop the other day I happened upon a copy of the 12" single version of 'Cloudbusting' (1985). I've been a big KB fan for some years anyway, but it was the sleeve of the record that turned my head. Kate in silhoutte in the operator's seat of a Cloudbusting machine, in was turns out on the back of the record to be a FairIsle sweater, trousers (details not clear) and what looks like Mens' Wellingtons as made by Dunlop throughout the 70s. Two pics attached are poor on detail as I've downloded them from collectors' sites & they were tiny to start with, but I'll try to get a partial scan sorted over the next few days of the 12" sleeve.

EXHIBIT B. From the very first Kate LP back in 1978 (and I believe the B-side of 'Wuthering Heights' but don't quote me on that) here is the lyric of the song 'Kite' How rare for a girl of (then) 20 to even mention the infamous WBs. Not sure about the sentiment of the song though. Is she saying don't bother trying or is she saying just don't look down? Mysterious, what?

Beelzebub is aching in my belly-o
My feet are heavy and I'm rooted in my wellios
And I want to get away and go
From all these mirror windows
I look at eye level, it isn't good enough
And then I find out, when I take a good look up
There's a hole in the sky with a big eyeball
Calling me-
Come up and be a kite
And fly a diamond night
A diamond kite, a diamond kite
Ooh, what a diamond!
A diamond kite, on a diamond flight
Over the lights, under the moon
Over the lights, under the moon
Over the moon, over the moon
I feel a rush along my body like a bullet
I'm 2D, after a push and pull feeling
And I want to get back to safe home
I love the homeland dome
I got no limbs, I'm like a feather on the wind
Well I'm not sure if I want to be up here at all
And I'd like to be back on the ground
But I don't know how to get down

Prosecution rests (maybe)

MEANWHILE
The lyrics of 'Cloudbusting' have dark-deviant (as well as political) overtones too that lock into my mentality. What makes it special is what makes it dangerous indeed. But I don't do 'Bury it and forget'.

I still dream of Organon.
I wake up crying.
You're making rain
And you're just in reach
When you and sleep escape me

You're like my yo-yo
That glowed in the dark

What made it special
Made it dangerous
So I bury it and forget.

Everytime it rains,
you're here in my head
Like the sun coming out -
Ooh I just know that something good is going to happen
And I don't know when
But just saying it could even make it happen.

On top of the world
Looking over the edge
You could see them coming
You looked too small
In their big black car
To be a threat to the men in power.

I hid my yo-yo in the garden

I can't hide you from the government
Oh God, daddy - I won't forget

Your son's coming out
