From Abigail

Dear Lorraine

Thank you so much for putting my letter about my love for school gaberdines, school blazers and wellington boots on your web-site. It was nice to start a new section about gaberdine regulation uniform and I hope it encourages other ladies like myself to write about their love of gaberdines and wellingtons. I am sure there must be quite a few ladies who like to relive their schooldays and wear their school uniforms. Maybe any letters referring to gaberdines could be transferred to this section.

Whilst it has been very hot in England, I have been in Ireland where it has been wet and I have therefore been able to wear my gaberdines and wellingtons. Gaberdines are the most wonderful coat any lady could possibly wear.

I like your photograph of the schoolgirls at the end of my letter, but what a pity not one of the girls has fastened her top button. I simply cannot bear to have my top button not fastened.

After seeing the photograph however, and the recent TV programme re 1950's schools, I must admit that I am now looking to buy a schoolhat and a gymslip (box-pleated with the two buttons on each shoulder) - I think they look terrific.

Thank you again for my letter appearing in your rainwear club. I do hope other ladies write in.

Love

Abi.

PS I would be delighted if you put this letter on your site.

Dear Abi

Thank you. Will you be able to buy a full traditional school uniform anywhere these days? I remember looking long and hard not long ago just for a navy gaberdine mac (for someone who asked us if we made them) but I drew a blank - and we couldn't find a source for the right material to make one up ourselves. But we could do the dress! The cotton material should be available, shoudn't it? - and there must be patterns still about somewhere.

Thank you for writing - and good luck with what is I suppose today called a 'heritage' project! Maybe you could get Lottery funding?
